Frequently Asked Questions
What is structural timber used for?
Structural timber is used in load-bearing applications, such as wall frames, roof trusses, floor joists, beams and posts. It forms the skeleton of a building and must meet strict strength and durability standards. This type of timber is usually graded (e.g., MGP10, MGP12, F7) and can be either softwood (like treated pine) or hardwood. It’s essential for safe construction and must comply with Australian Building Codes.
What’s the difference between structural and non-structural timber?
The main difference is strength and use. Structural timber is machine or visually graded to handle loads and resist bending, compression and tension. Non-structural timber, while still useful, doesn’t meet the same load-bearing requirements and is used for things like decorative panels, fences or furniture. Using the wrong type in a structural role can lead to safety issues, so it’s important to choose the right grade.
Is hardwood or softwood better for structural framing?
It depends on the project. Softwood (like machine-graded pine) is commonly used for frames due to its affordability, ease of handling and good strength-to-weight ratio. However, for heavier loads or longer spans, dense hardwoods (like Spotted Gum or Ironbark) provide extra durability and resistance to wear. In bushfire-prone or high-moisture areas, hardwood may also perform better over time.
Do I need treated timber for structural work?
In many cases, yes—especially if the timber will be exposed to moisture, insects or placed near the ground. Treated structural timber (H2 or H3 rating) helps protect against rot and termites, making it suitable for outdoor or damp environments. Untreated timber may still be used internally in dry areas but always check with your builder or supplier to ensure the right treatment grade is used for safety and compliance.
